PF TA PF TA PF PERIODIC TABLE!

PF TA PF TA PF PERIODIC TABLE! PF TA PF TA PF PERIODIC TA- Oh hey guys, didn't see you there. I was just making a rap about the periodic table. And yes, that's what we'll be learning about today. Let's get started. OK, so the periodic table is a chart that shows all of the elements known to man. The person who made this chart was a guy called Dmitri Mendeleev. He was the youngest child of 18 kids! 17 SIBLINGS?! Gosh, I can't even handle one!! He was born in Tobolsk, Siberia in 1834. He studied at St. Petersburg and then later became professor! He then arranged the 63 known elements into a chart called, you guessed it, The Periodic Table!! Obviously, the periodic table has been modified a bunch of times. They change it because they find new elements and they need a place on the chart. Speaking of new atoms, they named an element after him!! It's called Mendelevium.

cool beard

Now on to the actual periodic table. There are 118 elements on it. Yeah, I know, that's a lot of elements. But, elements over 92 are too unstable to be made in nature so it has to be made in a lab. If you guys were wondering what 92 is for, then I'm about to tell you. If you weren't thinking that, then plug your ears because you're not allowed to hear! Just kidding! The "92" is the elements atomic number. That shows how many protons are in their atomic nuclei. The atomic number is at the top and under that is the elements symbol. The symbol is the 2 or 3 letter abbreviation for the element. Like Helium would be He. Under the symbol is the name of the element. And finally, under that is something called the atomic mass. That is exactly what you'd expect it to be, the mass of an atom. Basically, it's how much the atom weighs. Since most of the mass of an atom is in its nucleus, it's technically how much the nucleus of an atom weighs. Here's a picture of how an element looks on the periodic table:

see, this is how Helium looks

Elements are put in order from there atomic number. They are also put in these things called groups and periods. Groups are elements with similar configurations of electrons. They are put in vertical columns and are numbered 1-18. Periods describe the number of electon shells that have elements have. Do you remember learning about electron shells? They are what electrons orbit on. Well, each element gets an electron added to thier shell. So the first one, starting from the left, has one on it's outer shell, and the one on the other end, the right side, is completely full. Sorry for confusing you all but hey it's not MY fault your brains don't process this information!! Haha just kidding!!

Another thing you should know are catagories. These are elements that have the some properties. There are 7 different groups. Alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, poor metals, semimetals, nonmetals, and noble gases.

That my friends, was the periodic table. I hope you liked!! Ok, now on to our next topic. Oh you thought the blog was over????????

IT IS! Science Fun:)

Total History Secion Today!

Hey everyone!!! Well today is gonna be totally about history. Weird right? But who doesn't love a little history? Anyways, our topic is gonna be kind of sad. It's about 9/11. As you guys know, last Sunday was the 10th anniversary of the terrible terrorist attack that happened in New York. This was the worst tragedy America ever had. It killed more people than the attack of Pearl Harbor. So sad...

AW!

It all started at 8:46am on Tuesday September 11, 2001. A hijacked plane flew into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. At 9:03 a second hijacked plane flew into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. All bridges were closed around New York and New Jersey. Every airport in the country was closed, that was the first time that every happened. At 9:45 a third hijacked plane crashed into the Pentagon. At 10:05 the South Tower collapsed. At 10:10 a huge part of the Pentagon collapsed. Also at 10:10 the fourth hijacked plane crashed in a rural part of Pennsylvania. The only reason it didn't crash into some other monument was because the brave people on that flight confronted the hijackers. Then, at 10:28 the North Tower fell. The damage had been done.

These terrorists were part of a group called Al Qaeda led by Osama Bin Laden. They had been planning the attack for years. For some reason, they hate us. No one really knows why but they do. I don't get why either, I mean we are awesome! Anyways, they were hoping that this attack would break America apart. But we did the exact opposite. We came together more of a country than we ever have. It showed them and the rest of the world that we Americans are strong. We can do anything if we put our heart and soul into it. It showed the world that we are not weak.

Every American knows about 9/11. You always feel emotional when you hear about it. Everyone now feels sad, sick to your stomach, shock, and just overall bad. People in the future will probably feel just as bad. They might not have as much emotion because they weren't actually to witness it. But they could always do stuff to remember it. They could look at some pictures, watch a video, or better yet, visit the memorial. If your wondering what the memorial is, let me tell you so your brain can be filled with even more knowledge. Basically the memorial is were the Twin Towers once stood. It has a waterfall and all of the people's names that tragically died there. The place is now called Ground Zero.

this is what one of them looks like. the other one looks identical

Lots of things came out of 9/11. Both good and bad. The bad is all the lives lost and the damage that happened. The good is how much America came together and the new Freedom Tower they're building. This will be at Ground Zero and will be a whole lot bigger and safer than the old Twin Towers. It will be 1,776 feet tall. They want it to be this length because in that's when America got our independence, 1776. Plus, they are making it with lots of precautions. So it's gonna be really safe.

this is how it's planning to look

9/11 was such a terrible event in our country's history. It killed over 3,000 people. It really was the worst tragedy of our country's history. But hey, we made it. Even if it is a thing of the past, it still happened. We should celebrate this day by a simple day of rememberance. Remember the people who died on those planes, the heros who risked their lives to save others in the towers, and the brave people who confronted the hijackers and made the plane not crash into another building. We Will Never Forget. Science Fun:)

History In Science Class? WHAAAAAAAAAT?

Hello my fellow people of the world! So as you might have read from my title, we are gonna have a little history mixed in with our science. (we are?!) Yeah didn't you guys read the title? (uh we were supposed to?) Yes, yes you were. But it doesn't matter! Anyways, what we will talk about is the history of atoms. First thing is who had the first idea about atoms. This dude's name was Democritus and he lived in like 2400 BC. Here is how he looked like:

So now we are going to get to know our dear friend Democritus. Let's call him Dem for short. HEYYYY DEM! Anyways, Dem was born  460 BC in Abdera, Thrace. No, I don't know where that is so don't ask. He did live in Greece though. Dem was one of the best Greek philosophers. Not much is known on his life though. He was also a mathematician, but he was known more for his tribute to science. SCIENCE NERDS RULE! Isn't that right Dem?

haha you know it!

That was a little bit about Dem. Now let's get down to the science-ness of it all. Democritus asked, "What id you could keep cutting something forever?" His theory was that you can't keep cutting something forever, eventually you'd get to the smallest most tinniest piece which is impossible to cut anymore. He called that tiny piece "atomos" and he pictured it looked a little like this:

ignore the democritus part

Well when he told all the other philosophers, they really didn't care. Dem was like, "Hey guys, I think that there's this thing called atoms which is the smallest particle of something!" And the other philosophers were like, "Yea that's cool and all but I'm gonna go listen to Aristotle." POOR DEM! And who was Aristotle you ask? He was the most well known philosopher of that time. He had a different theory. He thought that everything in the world was made up of water, earth, fire, air. He proved this by burning a log. The flames coming out was fire, the ash was the air, he used water to put it out, and the stuff left over was earth. And that simple little experiment was able to win everyone over. Here's a picture of Aristotle.

The sad thing is that poor Dem's idea didn't get recognized till 2,000 years later! Poor, poor Dem. But hey, at least it got recognized! If you want to learn the stuff that I didn't teach you then you can go here:

Sadly, Dem's idea got ignored for 2,000 years! Man, Dem really isn't that lucky! Well at least it got recognized! Even if it took a long time. Well, I think you guys got the idea about the first atomic theory. Since you were all so good, I'll give you a video. Goodbye my fellow people of the world! Science Fun:)
