History In Science Class? WHAAAAAAAAAT?

Hello my fellow people of the world! So as you might have read from my title, we are gonna have a little history mixed in with our science. (we are?!) Yeah didn't you guys read the title? (uh we were supposed to?) Yes, yes you were. But it doesn't matter! Anyways, what we will talk about is the history of atoms. First thing is who had the first idea about atoms. This dude's name was Democritus and he lived in like 2400 BC. Here is how he looked like:

So now we are going to get to know our dear friend Democritus. Let's call him Dem for short. HEYYYY DEM! Anyways, Dem was born  460 BC in Abdera, Thrace. No, I don't know where that is so don't ask. He did live in Greece though. Dem was one of the best Greek philosophers. Not much is known on his life though. He was also a mathematician, but he was known more for his tribute to science. SCIENCE NERDS RULE! Isn't that right Dem?

haha you know it!

That was a little bit about Dem. Now let's get down to the science-ness of it all. Democritus asked, "What id you could keep cutting something forever?" His theory was that you can't keep cutting something forever, eventually you'd get to the smallest most tinniest piece which is impossible to cut anymore. He called that tiny piece "atomos" and he pictured it looked a little like this:

ignore the democritus part

Well when he told all the other philosophers, they really didn't care. Dem was like, "Hey guys, I think that there's this thing called atoms which is the smallest particle of something!" And the other philosophers were like, "Yea that's cool and all but I'm gonna go listen to Aristotle." POOR DEM! And who was Aristotle you ask? He was the most well known philosopher of that time. He had a different theory. He thought that everything in the world was made up of water, earth, fire, air. He proved this by burning a log. The flames coming out was fire, the ash was the air, he used water to put it out, and the stuff left over was earth. And that simple little experiment was able to win everyone over. Here's a picture of Aristotle.

The sad thing is that poor Dem's idea didn't get recognized till 2,000 years later! Poor, poor Dem. But hey, at least it got recognized! If you want to learn the stuff that I didn't teach you then you can go here:

Sadly, Dem's idea got ignored for 2,000 years! Man, Dem really isn't that lucky! Well at least it got recognized! Even if it took a long time. Well, I think you guys got the idea about the first atomic theory. Since you were all so good, I'll give you a video. Goodbye my fellow people of the world! Science Fun:)

What are we gonna talk about.....

Hey guys! So I really don't know what we are going to talk about today but I'm sure that we will figure something out- (ring ring) Oh one second.

*me on the phone* Hey Steve! Where are you? *Steve my pet unicorn* NEIGH! *translation*. I'm at Om's.*me* Oh OK! Well bye!

So good news guys! I found our topic today! We are gonna talk about... ATOMS!! Alrighty then, the first thing we are gonna talk about is what an atom is. Well, basically an atom is the smallest thing EVER! For example, take a piece of paper. Cut it in half, then keep cutting it until you cant cut it anymore. Your ending result is an atom. Atoms are really small. So small, you can't even see them! But, trust me, they are there. And where exactly is there? There is everywhere! Basically, atoms make up anything and everything. People, animals, plants, trees, lamps, chairs, and even air!

that's an atom boys and girls!

Now we know what an atom is. Yay for us! But now we need to talk about the structure of atoms. Well, an atom has a thing in its center called the nucleus. It has these things called protons and neutrons which we shall talk about later. Ha ha I love that word, shall. It sounds so fancy. Anyways, outside the nucleus is this thing called an electron which we will also talk about later. The electron is moving at almost light's speed around the nucleus. It's moving so fast it looks like there is a fuzzy cloud around the nucleus. Another cool thing about the structure of an atom is that it's mainly empty space. Here's a picture:

So now we are going to talk about the stuff I promised we would talk about. And those are protons, neutrons, and electrons! Let's start with protons. Protons are one of the subatomic particles that are in the nucleus, just as I said before. They are kinda heavy, well as heavy as you can get for a subatomic particle. They have a positive charge. JUST LIKE ME! Click Here to learn more about protons.

this is supposed to be the nucleus of an atom

Now on to the neutron. Neutrons are also in the nucleus. They are always right next to the protons. Neutrons really don't have a charge, they're just neutral, hence the name neutron. They are just as heavy as the protons. Click Here to learn more about neutrons. Oh and did anyone else think of  Jimmy Neutron when I said neutron? If not you are definitely thinking about it now!

I used to LOVE this show!!
Last but not least, we have the electron. Electrons are much smaller than the proton and nucleus and have a negative charge. For every electron there is a proton. This makes the atom even. But, sometimes an atom loses an electron. Bye bye electron! This makes the atom more positive. However, sometimes an atom gains an electron making the atom more negative. Click Here to learn more about electrons.

aw he has such a big nose!

Well, that's it for this atom's blog! Hope your brain is filled with new knowledge! Now, I have to go, I have to get Steve from Om's house. I'll leave you with this atom's song. BYE GUYS! Science Fun:)

SCHOOLS BACK!

Hey guys! (heyyyyyy) Guess what? (what?) IT'S SCHOOL! (mutter mutter) Yeah I know but the good news is I'm gonna do blogs again!! (sarcastic yay) Excuse me? (YAY!) Better. Well Right now I'm not doind science-y blogs. I'm gonna talk about my summer!

haha its so creepy!!
So as basically what I did this summer is hang out with friends. You know, had a couple sleepovers, went to the mall, went to the movies, went to the pool. By the way, I beat my record of staying up at a sleepover, I stayed up till 7:40am!! WOOP! And I saw the best movie in the history of the universe... HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2!!!!!! Oh my god it was so good!! VOLDEMORT HAS NO NOSE!! I mean seriously watch this and say it's NOT amazing!!

OH MY GOD IT'S SO GOOD! But probably the main highlight was having my British cousins coming. Their names are Rami and Danny. They were awesome! They had the most AMAZING British accent ever!! Haha we went to White Waters, Georgia Aquarium, pool, mall, restaurants, everything! They were so much fun and I can't wait to see them again. Plus they're British!! I love British people! If you're British then you are my friend.

its true

Well that was my summer! But I'm not done yet..... I'm gonna tell you guys what I want to improve on this year. I really wanna get straight A's all year! That means I need to really need to do good at one thing... VOCAB! I'm not that amazing at that. And believe it or not, I wanna get better at my blogs! I know what you're thinking, (but she's already amazing!) well I wanna get even more amazing! I wanna try to put more info in them and less of myself. So it can be more informational but not boring. So yeah straight A's and better blogs. If I do that I will be really happy!!

haha that's exactly how I'd be! a creepy smiley person!

Well that's the end of this back to school blog! I'll be back next week with my first science related blog of this school year! See you guys then! BYE!!! Science Fun:)

I NEED WATER!!!

Ugh it is SO hot! I don't know WHY I ever chose to walk in the desert! Hey, look its the Nile River! YAY WATER! Oh god, I hope it's not a hallucination...

please be real!

Ah, better. Well, I learned something when I was there. I learned about this new virus. It's called the West Nile Virus. Well I bet you guys are thinking, "How do you get it?" You get it from mosquitoes. Ugh I hate mosquitoes. But basically, they come and bite you, however that mosquito needs to have the virus. So, you're talking a hike or something, and then this mosquito comes and bites you. At first you think, it's just a normal mosquito bite. But the reality is, it's much more than that.

EWWWWWWWWWWW! I HATE MOSQUITOES!

A mosquito bite from regular mosquito is no fun. But a bite from one that has the West Nile Virus? Absolutely no fun. Symptoms from West Nile start appearing 5 to 15 days after being bitten. You usually have these:
-severe headaches
-fever
-nausea and vomiting
-disorientation
-chills
-muscle aches, pain, stiffness
(If you have any of these symptoms after getting bit by a mosquito, call a doctor!

this is what you should do

Before you start freaking out, let me tell you how to prevent it. STAY AWAY FROM MOSQUITOES! As in, when you go outside, make sure to wear bug spray. Also, try to have DEET in the spray. Try not to let mosquitoes breed. They can breed in any place that has still water. Cover pools when you're not using it. Stay away from water at dusk and dawn, that's when mosquitoes are most active. But sadly, they are still active during the day. Lucky us...

yeah, I don't think that's gonna get rid of him...

Here's some more good news. This virus rarely affects people. It mainly affects birds. You may have seen a bird randomly fall out of the sky. Scientists usually take the bird and test it for West Nile. But, even if a human does get it, there really isn't anything you can do. It just goes away by time. They do have a vaccine, though. Yay for humans! We can prevent it! We can stay healthy! Woohoo!

her name is Suzy

There still is a lot I didn't cover about this topic. So, I'm gonna give you a link. Click Here!!!!  There are four different sections. There's also a comic! Be sure to look at all of them! Alrighty then, that's my blog on West Nile! Bye!!! Science Fun:)

PEACE OUT!!!!!

Idk why this posted! haha it was on accident!

I'm in the mood for some chciken...

Hm I am really in the mood for some chicken. Maybe I should stop by Chick-Fil-A. Ooh Ooh I know! I should go to--- oh sorry! I never noticed you guys there! Well since I'm in the mood for something chicken related, let's talk about the chicken pox! Now, does anyone know anything about it? (IT COMES FROM A CHICKEN!) No, Brittney, chicken pox does not come from a chicken. Chicken pox is a viral disease. This means that the actual chicken pox comes from a virus. The virus has a weirdly-cool name, it's called the varicella-zoster virus, or VZV.

it kinda looks like eggs sunny side up...

So when you heard of chicken pox, what do you think of? (A BEAVER) OK Brittney, I don't see how you got beaver out of chicken pox but ok. Anyways, when you hear "chicken pox" you usually think of red dots all of your body and and they're really itchy. All of that is true, but there's more than just that. First, you're in the incubation period. This is where you have the virus, but you don't know. When you're in the incubation period, you feel completely fine. It go on for 10-21 days!

this is how you feel

Now let's talk more about the symptoms. After the incubation period, you start to feel a bit sick. Kinda like you have the flu. Then the famous rash begins. You start having red blotches on your body. The worst part is the itch!!! It itches like itchy red blotches! But to make it even worse, you can't itch. If you do, it'll leave a scar. So imagine you have a million mosquito bites all over you and you can't itch! Eventually after a couple days, your blotches start falling off. Yuck.

that is really gross

I know it may seem like you're doomed and you must get it. But you actually don't. They do have vaccines to help prevent you from getting it. Also, you usuallly get it when you're a kid, but some adults do get it. One more thing, when you finish with your horrible time with the chiken pox, your not actually done forever. That virus doesn't just "go away." It just stays there and doesn't do anything until ur about 60 or 70. Then you have something called shingles. But that's a different topic for a different day. Well that's all for today. Here's a cool pic for ya! Bye everyone!!! Science Fun:)

hahaha

SPRING BREAK BABY!!!!!!!

Heyyyyyy! I just got back from an AWESOME spring break! It was so much fun! I did everything everyday! So now I bet you want me to tell you what went on. And my answer is.....sure! I'm gonna tell you in order. Alright let's start!
On Saturday me, my mom, my dad, and Zeina went out to Bahama Breeze for linner. (dinner+lunch=linner) Then my friend Tala slept over.

I love this place!!!

On Sunday, me, my mom, my dad, Zeina, and Tala went to this park that's on Lake Lanier. I think its the Buford Dam Park. Anyways, there was a lot of people that went with us. OK so this is everyone that went with us. Me, my mom, my dad, Zeina, Tala, Tala's mom and dad, my aunt, my grandma, my great aunt, and my great uncle. Yeah I know, lots of peeps. Well there was SO many bees there! I would scream every time I saw one. Which was basically every 5 seconds. Zeina and Tala got so annoyed with me. But it was fun running from the bees!

that was me everyone!

On Monday, Anabel and Kate came over. Anabel slept over and Kate was SUPPOSED to sleep over too, but she felt bad and went home:( Well me and Anabel slept in my basement. We sat on the couch and watched Glee. Anabel had brought 4 DVDs of Glee! But together they had 13 Glee's total. We watched 11 because we had already seen 2 before she came. So after like 6 Glee's we took a break and watched music videos on MTV. We started dancing to Born This Way at like 2:00am. Speaking of things we did at 2:00am, we made commercials. Anabel made a Coke Zero commercial, and I made a Pretzel commercial. It was fun! Eventually, we fell asleep at 5:30am and woke up at like 12:00pm. Oh yeah here is my Pretzel commercial! Hope you like!!!

On Tuesday, Anabel and I made french toast for breakfast. It was yummy! Then, she left at like 5:30.
On Wednesday, I went to Bruster's with my aunt, my grandma, and Zeina. We got waffle cones and I was about to explode of ice cream!!!
On Thursday, I went shopping with my mom. I got lots of pretty things.

i <3 shopping!

On Friday, I went to see the movie Soul Surfer with Anabel and Sydney. (my peeps) It was a good movie. Then we went to Chick-Fil-A. I love that place!

love me some chick-fil-a!
On Saturday, I went to Arabic School then I slept over at my friend Tala's house. We played on the trampoline a lot. When night came, we stayed up till like 3:00am watching Chopped
On Sunday, we went on the trampoline some more. It was fun until Zeina jumped and landed on my ankle! That really hurt! We had pizza and chicken tenders for dinner. Then, my parents picked me and Zeina up at 7:30pm. I was so tired when I got home!

that was me

So that was my spring break! It was really fun! Alright then, bye!
Science Fun:)
